Colonial style furniture originated within British colonies and was influenced by styles used in England. Colonial furniture can be seen a lot in India, introduced by the Portuguese in the Mid-1500s. And it evolved with influences by Dutch, French and the British. The European settlements in India found the furniture here lacking to their taste and started importing furniture from their countries. In a while they realized that the Indian artisans were very skilled and could copy or imitate the intricate designs and patterns of the West. This led to a unique Indo-European style of furniture that flourished.
